Free Online Schooling is Becoming a Priority in the Armed Forces

By: Aubrey Moulton

Officers in the Marinesare making online schooling a top priority to deployed soldiers.

“Power is knowledge. If a Marine takes advantage of education opportunities while they’re in the military, they will become more ready for action in their armed occupation department and in the civilian workforce,” Gunnery Sgt. Anthony Forbes, says.

The military will help soldiers afford school. Forbes is working towards a degree in Human Resources. He has earned 71 credits while being enlisted the entire time.

“With the current speed of things here in Iraq, there is no excuse why every Marine cannot take at least one course while here,” says Master Sgt. James Emch. “If they want to improve on themselves and set themselves up for sucess, they should seize the opportunity.”

Deployed soldiers can pick up up to 100 percent of their schooling costs paid for by the government through programs like Tuition Assistance, the Montgomery GI Bill, and the Marine Corpse College Fund.

“The best time for Marines to pursue their education is when they're in the Corps, not when they get out,” says an education specialist at Camp Courtney in Japan.

A companion said he should visit ClassesandCareers.com, a free courses online information resource. Users can fill out a form and within minutes become connected to a live education advisor.

"I went to the site and told them about my goals," Sergeant John Noble says. "Not long after, an advisor called me and assisted me in finding a nice, flexible education online program. I can do lectures and homework through my time off."

Noble is now more than halfway through his bachelors in finance. "It's been very convenient for me to continue my schooling while I am enlisted,” Noble said. “I probably will finish right before I am released and will be able to go directly into a Masters Program.”
